Truthfully, motherhood can make getting in shape a challenge. Over the last four years, I haven’t been able to step foot into a gym. During that time, I’ve had to learn how to work toward my dream body in other ways.
About a year into motherhood, I realized how beneficial walking was. My child was still new to walking, so pushing a stroller through the neighborhood while tracking my distance on my iPhone was the most exercise I could manage outside of floor exercises at home. It worked well — I averaged about two to three miles a day over the course of a year, and it helped me maintain my weight.
As time went on, I had less flexibility to dedicate time to those daily walks and other responsibilities took priority. That’s when I turned to jump roping. I loved the high intensity — it felt similar to a HIIT workout, gave me a quick sweat, and I could clearly see changes in my body composition compared to walking alone. It also improved my stamina.
After becoming pregnant a second time, I stopped jump roping, as it wasn’t safe for me personally, and I no longer had the time to walk two to three miles in one session. That shift was discouraging, but over the years I’ve learned that a health and fitness journey isn’t linear — it evolves as life does. I wanted a wellness approach that reflected my current lifestyle, one that didn’t require going out of my way to reach my goals, but still allowed me to challenge myself.
With the Fitbit, I’m able to track my steps, calories, and activity. I’m currently using the Inspire 3 and have had it for about two weeks, and I’ve really been enjoying it. While there are many features, the ones I use most are step and distance tracking, calorie tracking, and heart rate monitoring.
When I relied solely on my phone to track my steps, I averaged around 5,000 a day. With the Fitbit, I can see that my actual average is closer to 7,000+ steps daily. My goal is 10,000 steps a day, and having this awareness has made me more intentional about reaching it. What I appreciate most is that I’m able to get my steps in throughout the day without dedicating a specific walking session — though that’s something I plan to return to. Being a mom naturally keeps me active, but the Fitbit helps keep me accountable to continue moving.

Using the Fitbit keeps me accountable to movement, but it also reminds me that my fitness journey doesn’t have to be rigid.
